City of Helsinki is an information provider on Helsinki City services, catering for a massive amount of digital services, which range from housing, education, immigration, marketing and many more. Almost each of the services has its own character, with a unique look and feel as well as own implementation, nevertheless leaning on Helsinki City’s brand. Whereas this gives variety between the services, it also brings difficulties for maintaining it.

City of Helsinki recognised the needs for a system, which keeps all their services consistent yet flexible. 

To achieve this, we were commissioned to establish the building ground of an open-source design system for digital products and experiences. With the Helsinki City design language as its foundation, we created a system consisting of working code, design tools and resources, human interface guidelines for a vibrant community of contributors.
